How to Charge a Mobility Scooter
Last updated: December 17, 2018

Whether you're going to the local market, attending a party, or visiting a neighbour's house this Christmas, your battery-operated mobility scooter can get you there in comfort and style.

However, neglecting to charge your mobility scooter batteries - even for just one day - could reduce your scooter's driving range and interrupt the freedom you've come to rely upon and enjoy.

Follow the battery charging instructions below and your scooter will always be ready to take you where you want to go, when you want to go.

Charging Your Mobility Scooter Batteries

If you encounter any difficulty managing these procedures, please seek assistance. These easy steps are for charging the batteries while they are housed within the scooter. Additional battery charging tips can be found in your scooter owner's manual, if you have one.

  1. Turn the scooter's power switch to the OFF position.
  2. Connect the charger's three-pin plug to the charging port on the scooter.
  3. Plug the charger's power cable into a wall outlet.
  4. When the charger's LED red/orange light is on, the battery is charging. Optimal charging time is 12 to 14 hours, or up to 16 hours to achieve a complete charge for a mid size pavement mobility scooter.  For smaller boot scooters this time can be reduced by about half. The scooter manual will have the exact charging times recommended for your scooter's batteries.
  5. Stop charging when the LED light is completely green.
  6. Disconnect charger from the mobility scooter.
  7. Disconnect charger from the wall socket.
  8. Run your scooter before riding it to verify the battery charge.

Recharge Mobility Scooter Batteries Regularly

The batteries of a mobility scooter need to be charged to full capacity every night. This point cannot be emphasised enough. The batteries should also be fully re-charged before taking your first ride on a new scooter, after every drive and at least once a week if the scooter is kept in storage.

A mobility scooter that receives regular, routine charging will reward you with dependable performance, consistent power and long-lasting batteries.

The instructions and images on this page are general in nature and may not apply to every type of mobility scooter. As mobility scooter specifications vary according to mobility scooter model, battery charging procedures will also differ. Please consult your mobility scooter owner's manual for exact charging instructions.

It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations in the manual that came with the mobility scooter, because each scooter has different instructions.

A Word of Advice

Do not use a different charger to the one that came with your mobility scooter. Although the three pin connector may fit your mobility scooter and the charger may look the same, the substitute charger may have a different current rating to that of the wiring on your mobility scooter.  Mixing and matching mobility scooter battery chargers can be dangerous.

If your mobility scooter charger is damaged, doesn't turn on or is otherwise behaving strangely, do not use it.

Here at Scooter Wiz we can supply you with a new charger for a reasonable cost should you require. Please give us a call on 07411 779323 with your scooter model number to hand and we will be happy to help.
